Opposition Leader Giorgi Vashadze Leaves Prison After Serving Seven-Month Sentence

Giorgi Vashadze was released from prison today, January 23. He had been held in Rustavi No. 12 Penitentiary for seven months.

Giorgi Vashadze is the leader of the political party Strategy Aghmashenebeli. He was arrested on June 24, 2025, for failing to appear before the so-called Tsulukiani Investigative Commission.

“I am spirited and optimistic… I want to greet the people of Georgia. I am confident and I believe that we will definitely prevail, because we want to live in a just country – a country that moves forward, ranks among developed nations, is a worthy member of the European Union, has a presence on the international stage, and where we live happily.

I want a country where no one is imprisoned, a country where people are not detained simply for having a different opinion.

My faith that we will succeed is so strong that not a single day felt wasted… I truly want to express my deep respect for prisoners of conscience… Thanks to their parents, to their mothers – an incredible fighting spirit emerges every day, and when you turn on the television from inside prison, you remain firm and strong,” Giorgi Vashadze told journalists after his release.

Vashadze is among the eight opposition leaders charged with sabotage, assisting a foreign state in hostile activities, financing actions directed against Georgia’s constitutional order and national security, and inciting the violent overthrow of the constitutional system and government.
